Health and Safety
At Aotea Southern, the health and safety of our people, clients, and contract partners is a top priority. Led by our Health & Safety and Sustainability Manager, we use regular toolbox H&S meetings, clear safety systems, and ongoing risk assessments to prevent incidents and maintain a safe, supportive workplace. Our teams are empowered to take the time to plan work safely, with Job Safety Analysis and Task Analysis embedded into daily practices through the Assura platform, enabling staff to assess risks, use their experience, and work safely and effectively.
Our health and safety framework includes:
- 100% Sitewise certification.
- SiteSafe training and worksite inductions.
- Engagement through Health and Safety Excellence Awards.
- Staff wellbeing resources through our EAP and external companies such as Mates in Construction
- Rehabilitation and Return to Work support.
Sustainability
As we strive to be leaders within our industry, Aotea Southern is committed to sustainability and recognises that with growth comes increased responsibility. We view sustainability as a process of continuous improvement, with a focus on our people, our business, our community, our country (through the Aotea Group), and ultimately our planet. Sustainability is embedded in our strategic plan, aligned with our core values (integrity, people, community, and innovation) and is supported by an established framework. This includes a Sustainability Committee, departmental representatives, and a partnership with BraveGen to measure and understand our carbon footprint.
- Recycling and Waste Reduction – Establishment of an onsite Recycling Centre in 2023, providing accessible recycling options for a wide range of materials.
- Renewable Energy – Our commitment to renewable energy generation was shown with the establishment of our solar department and installing solar panels on our Dunedin office, reducing our reliance on non-renewable power sources.
- Supplier Collaboration – Working with suppliers to reduce waste through initiatives such as recycled and returnable cable reels and cardboard packaging alternatives.
- People and Community – Ongoing investment in our people through training, wellbeing initiatives, diversity, and health and safety, alongside opportunities to engage in sustainability and community projects, including Gold Sponsorship of the Wild Dunedin Festival of Nature.
- Building Our Reputation – Positioning Aotea as a trusted leader in energy and carbon emission reduction by providing carbon reporting to customers and partnering with like‑minded organisations.
